STERLING SILVER, GOLD, PALLADIUM AND PLATINUM HALLMARKS

Under Part II of Schedule I, Point 12a, of the UK Hallmarking Act 1973 (and subsequent amendments thereof), Sterling Silver items which weigh less than 7.78 grams, Gold and Palladium items which weigh less than 1 gram (2 grams for a pair of earrings) and Platinum items which weigh less than 0.5 grams (1 gram for a pair of earrings) are exempt from compulsory hallmarking. The exemption weight is based on the weight of the precious metal content only and excludes, for example, the weight of all gemstones, stones and crystals set within the precious metal.

In addition, under Part II of Schedule I, Point 13a, of the UK Hallmarking Act 1973 (and subsequent amendments thereof), items which are so small or thin that they cannot be hallmarked are exempt from compulsory hallmarking.

All other items of Sterling Silver, Gold, Platinum and Palladium must carry a compulsory Hallmark, as indicated below, regardless of where the items were made.
